The £12 million garden antique statue

A four and a half foot marble antique statue in the depiction of Leda and the Swan had been in a family of the for more than 200 years and at one stage was used as a garden ornament. They had no idea of its value but when an antiquities specialist spotted the piece, he discovered it was from the second century Imperial Rome, and estimated its value at over £1million. It was taken to an antiques sale room in New York and it ended up selling for more than £12 million. Not bad for a garden ornament. I am sure it will now be placed on a fine piece of antique furniture where it belongs and will be lovingly looked after.

Is this a real mermaid from the 19th century?

A bizarre stuffed animal made to look like a mermaid that was brought to Britain from the Far East in the 19th century has emerged in an antiques auction recently.
It has been made from fish and monkey parts, very cleverly stuck together and gave the impression it was once a genuine mermaid.

The mermaid is placed on a wooden plinth in a swimming pose with its arms and hands outstretched, its large eyes staring ahead and a smile on its face. It has a tail fin, dorsal fin and a human looking face and thin arms leading to hands and even some hair on its head.

They were originally made to fool people into thinking they were real animals and displayed in curiosity shops.

It would be a very unusual piece to have on for antique furniture and definitely a good talking point!
