An antique commode has been stolen and I am publishing this to pre warn people in case they are offered such a piece. The antique commode has not been seen for more than twelve months and is believed to have been stolen whilst in storage in Buckinghamshire. The owner would love for the safe return of the item rather than financial recompense.
A substantial reward is offered for information leading to the safe recovery.
the description of the antique commode is as follows -

A George III ormolu-mounted sabicu and tulipwood commode, attributed to John Cobb, the cross banded half-veneered serpentine top with a gadrooned border above two short and two graduated long drawers, the angles mounted with pierced foliate and husked scrolling clasps with waved apron, cabriole legs and foliate scrolled sabots
47 1/2in. Wide; 32in. High; 24in. Deep

Serpentine, Bow Front and Break Front Antique furniture

There are many terms to describe antique furniture and three very nice shapes are Serpentine, Bow Front and Break Front Antique furniture

The serpentine front is to describe a wavy edge similar to the bow fronted but with half a bow front on either side. you can see this shape in very good period chest of drawers and quality antique side tables.

break front is the shape of a piece that steps forward in the centre or an inverted break front is that the piece steps back in the centre not forward. this is often seen in large antique library bookcases and break fronted wardrobes.

Where to buy Chippendale and Hepplewhite antique furniture at reasonable prices

Some very well known and well collected furniture designs were by the two great designers and Cabinet makers Chippendale and Hepplewhite from the 18th-century

Chippendale designs were by Thomas Chippendale from Yorkshire in the Georgian period but he moved to work in London near Covent Garden market and began making and designing pieces of furniture that are still copy today. He made a very interesting book showing all his designs furniture and this book was distributed to over join so many Chippendale style pieces were built in the Georgian and Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Hepplewhite furniture is also well and well collected. George Hepplewhite trained in Lancaster but then moved and worked in London. The book was made with all of his designs of antique furniture and again this is distributed throughout joiners who made and copied his designs throughout the Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian period

To buy these original pieces of furniture today from the Georgian period can be very expensive but a very good alternative to look at is late Victorian and Edwardian copies as these are very good quality built in the Chippendale and Hepplewhite design, but the beauty of these pieces is they are very reasonable to buy today. They can often be more reasonable to buy than modern reproduction furniture in the same design but Edwardian and Victorian pieces are much better quality.

Driscoll’s antiques always stock of vast amount quality Hepplewhite and Chippendale style furniture from the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

If you take a look at our beautiful antique dining tables and antique dining chairs you will see many designs by these renowned antique furniture designers.

Look at our Large Victorian Ball & Claw Antique Mahogany Dining Table in the Chippendale design, it is a large antique dining table to seek 10 people

Antique painted Shabby Chic furniture

Antique painted Shabby Chic furniture is extremely popular in today’s market place and Driscolls Antiques always tries to offer a very good selection for you to view on our antique furniture website. We have English and French pieces all painted in a shabby chic finish and the chairs are upholstered in a neutral fabric. We are looking to expand on this side of our business and will be adding more pieces shortly. All these pieces are under our antique painted and decorative furniture section and we have anything from a painted chest of drawers to a shabby chic chairs, sofa or arm chairs. This week we will be adding a French set of four painted chairs upholstered in old sacking cloth and two very nice shabby chic arm chairs. My current favourite piece we have on at the moment is our antique Continental Painted Pine Armoire with a moulded cornice above two moulded cupboard doors, key and working lock and stands on a shaped apron with splayed feet. It is a very useful piece and not only can be used as a bedroom piece but would be just as useful in your kitchen as a kitchen cupboard or even in a living room for your TV, dvd and all your cds as it has fitted shelves in the interior.
