Arts and Crafts Antique furniture

As antique furniture began to be made in the late Victorian period using some machinery, this led to some furniture designers and furniture craftsmen toward using the more traditional methods of construction and only using quality timbers and construction. This was called the Arts and Crafts period or also known as the Aesthetic movement.

Driscolls antiques always stock quality arts and crafts furniture and this week we have for sale three very nice pieces. The first is an antique Arts & Crafts oak antique partners desk which is very large. This antique desk has a large solid top with twin pedestals each with working drawers at both sides, so it is a real partners desk and the desk has pull out writing slides above drawers with moulded edges. The desk still has the original brass handles and is in the manor of a Heals piece of antique furniture.

The second item of arts and crafts antique furniture is a set of six antique Arts & Crafts oak dining chairs. This set of chairs are unusual as they are high back dining chairs with arched backs and beautiful carved corners. They are very interesting Arts & Crafts design and it is very difficult to find good quality antique aesthetic movement dining chairs.

We also have a victorian Arts & Crafts antique bench with an upholstered back above beautifully shaped, carved upright supports. It has been upholstery in a very nice leaf design fabric.

Antique Dickens Desk For Sale
This week in our antiques website we have for sale one of the most stunning antique desks and it is of the best quality, it is a Victorian antique dickens desk which is made from mahogany and was built in the early Victorian period. This stunning antique desk is of superb quality and is an unusual large size. It has a central gallery above a shaped shelf, four small mahogany lined drawers with locking arms, locks and key and beautiful carved corbels. This striking piece of antique furniture has a central writing slope with three green / brown leather writing inserts (probably original) and the interior has several pigeon holes, two small drawers veneered in satinwood and have the original ebonised turned knobs. The antique desk has a large central kneehole so you can comfortably get your knees under and each pedestal has four graduating mahogany lined drawers and stand on moulded plinths. The back has been finished and therefore can be positioned anywhere in a room and splits into three sections so can be easily moved. This quality antique desk is a rich medium red mahogany colour with striking figured grain and is in superb condition for its age. Antique Bookcase For Sale

Here at driscolls antiques ltd we always stock quality antique bookcase for sale and this week we have put up for sale some very nice Victorian and Edwardian antiques bookcases.

We have for sale a small antique Victorian walnut glazed bookcase with two beautifully carved corbels and two glazed doors; the interior has three adjustable shelves which is very useful and he lower section has a rectangular top above a drawer with original handles, carved corbels, two panelled doors.

We also have for sale an antique Edwardian mahogany glazed display cabinet which has a raised moulded back above an inverted breakfront top, four moulded glazed doors, glazed sides, the interior is lined with the original fabric which is still in good condition. This piece of antique furniture stands on six cabriole legs with ball and claw feet.

This week we have also put up for sale a large antique Edwardian mahogany glazed bookcase which has three glazed doors with moulded panels and each interior has three adjustable shelves but this piece stands on shaped bracket feet. Antique Roll Top Desk For Sale.
Driscolls antiques are proud to offer for sale a beautiful Edwardian antique American walnut roll top desk. This stunning antique roll top desk is tambour fronted and has its original locking plate which reads Feige Desk Co, Saginaw, Mich, USA. It is very rare to find good American pieces of antique furniture, especially in such good condition. This stunning antique desk has a rectangular moulded top above a tambour front which when open releases the original locking mechanism to release the drawers, so they open. The interior of the desk has several pigeon holes, letter racks, unusual pen holders and small working drawers. The lower section of the antique desk has a rectangular moulded top with canted corners above a large kneehole so you can comfortably get your knees under and each of the pedestals has a pull out writing slide above drawers. The antique desk stands on a plain plinth , splits into several sections for ease of removals, has panelled sides and back and the back has been finished allowing the piece to be displayed anywhere in a room. We always stock beautiful antique wardrobe for sale and this week we have a stunning antique wardrobe on offer. It is a victorian mahogany antique triple wardrobe built in the early Victorian period and has a moulded cornice above a central mirrored door; and has two full length beautifully figured doors all with original turned mahogany handles, deep arched moulding and each has a beautiful carved motif, it is a quality piece. The interior of this stunning piece of mahogany antique furniture has its original brass hanging hooks, four sliding linen trays above two over two mahogany lined drawers with the original brass swan neck handles. The antique wardrobe stands on a plain plinth, has original backboards, is of superb quality, and is very unusual as it splits into five sections plus doors so it will fit into most homes. This antique wardrobe is also a very good colour as it is a medium mahogany colour with a striking grain, good patina, is in very good condition. Antique Edwardian tables for sale

The first is a huge antique edwardian mahogany extending dining table which is very versatile as it is two D end side tables, a square centre table and two additional leaves and they all join together using brass D clips to make a large dining table. This dining table is very useful as you can just have a smaller table and when your guests arrive, join it together using your side tables and the other bonus is that it will seat twelve people.

The other antique table for sale is also from the Edwardian period and it is a edwardian antique mahogany dining table which stands on four chunky cabriole legs with ball and claw feet. This antique table extends in a different way as it has a winding handle and mechanism and two additional removable leaves.

English antique furniture styles and Makers

antique furniture is furniture that is over 100 years old and they come in several different styles due to the fashions of the period. These styles were copied over time so it is difficult to date just from the style alone so other factors need to be looked at like the construction and types of wood used. Early English antique furniture comes in to several categories like Queen Anne, Chippendale from the Georgian period, Adams furniture from the Georgian period, Hepplewhite from the Georgian period, Georgian Sheraton, and Regency antique furniture and these were determined by the style of the makers.

The Queen Anne antique furniture style comes from the early 1700s, is mainly made from walnut and these pieces of furniture usually have curved legs, were very elegant in style but simple in design.

Chippendale antique furniture style dates back to the late 18th century, and was mainly constructed from mahogany. Chippendale furniture was still simple in design but experimented with different themes like Rococo with some swerves, they were most famous for there antique mahogany chairs.

Adam furniture used mainly mahogany, and this style was more slender lines and was influenced by Greek styles.

Hepplewhite antique furniture and Sheraton antique furniture used mahogany and satinwood was similar to the above styles but with more inlay.

Regency antique furniture is my favourite period and mahogany was the main wood and the furniture was simple yet with some elegant moulding and inlays. The above styles all had a similarity but with the cabinet makers slight differences in the design making them individual pieces.

We have received in stock a small georgian antique oak bureau, it is particularly nice as it is of small proportions and was constructed around the 1770s. It has a moulded fall front and it is cross banded with mahogany, It has a stunning interior which has several pigeon holes, small drawers and a central inlaid cupboard door. The lower half of the piece has four graduating cock beaded drawers with original brass handles and the piece stands on shaped bracket feet, it is a very nice piece of antique furniture.
