Antique sideboard – The history

Just as the antique dresser developed from a side table, so too did the antique sideboard. In the upper and middle class homes in the mid 1700s, antique side tables and antique serving tables, were used in the dining room. Later, pedestals on either side of the serving table were introduced to create extra storage or to hold wine bottles or plates.

This arrangement was not very practical in smaller middle class homes and so the pedestals became incorporated into the serving table and so the antique sideboard was born.

antique sideboards usually had six legs and were straight, bow fronted or sometimes serpentine fronted. They had a shallow central drawer to hold cutlery and at either end a cupboard or deep drawer which when lined with lead and partitioned to hold wine bottles, is known as a cellarette.

From the 1700s to the 1820s antique sideboards often had a brass rail fitted along the back with curtains as they were hung from the rail to prevent food from being splashed on the wall when meals were served.

Antique sideboards with pedestal ends remained popular throughout the Victorian era, in many instances a low backboard was added, which in time became higher, and mirrors were often incorporated into the design. Eventually the space between pedestals was fully enclosed to provide further cupboard space and this was much more practical. Our large antique furniture showroom always stocks beautiful antique sideboards for sale so please click the link on the left hand side to see our latest stock.

Different types of antique tables.

As England prospered in the eighteenth century new antique furniture arose like the antique pembroke table, named either after the countess of Pembroke. These types of antique table are usually oval or rectangular in shape and antique pembroke tables were often made of mahogany, with a single drawer in the centre and a drop leaf hinged to each side. They were usually kept against a wall and simply pulled forward when needed for meals, needlework, writing or drawing.

The antique sutherland table, is a very small gate leg table with a very narrow central portion and deep flaps, it was popular in Victorian times because it folded away so easily but gave a useful surface when needed. It was named after the Duchess of Sutherland, a mistress of the robes to Queen Victoria.

The antique sofa table became widespread mainly in the Regency times. It was designed to be drawn up in front of a sofa, providing a surface on which to read, write or draw. A development of the Pembroke table, the sofa table is longer and usually has drawers on both sides. Since they occupied a prominent place in the room, sofa tables were often elaborately decorated and were sometimes inlaid with brass or ebony. All these antique tables are very nice pieces of antique furniture and you can see good examples on our website for sale, all are good quality and are in superb condition for there age.

What an Unusual antique chest on chest

This week we have in stock a very unusual antique chest on chest. It is Edwardian mahogany and in the Chippendale revival style. It is unusual because it has a cupboard above all the drawers and this would probably be used to store the hats. Most antique chest on chests are only all drawers so this added bonus makes it a very useful piece of antique furniture. Chippendale revival furniture is very popular today and I believe will be on of the most sought after pieces of furniture in the future as the original period is so difficult to come across today so this is a good alternative. Chippendale revival furniture also comes with the added benefit of being a fraction of the cost of an original piece. Edwardian furniture in the Chippendale style is usually constructed in very good timber such as mahogany and are built to a very high standard. I believe this piece would be a very good investment for the future.
