Probably the most expensive chip we have ever shown on the Antiques Roadshow

Recently on the antiques roadshow a Vase appeared that had a very small chip, but this chip cost him £12,000. The vase, which would have been worth £14,000 without the chip, would now sell for just £2,000 and what’s worse is it was accidentally chipped while wrapping it up to be valued.

The positive news was it only cost £3 at a car boot sale so he was still in profit by £1997.

Experts on the Antiques Roadshow, said it was the most expensive chip they had ever seen.

The vase was a three-legged Japanese porcelain vase ca. 1900 and had been used as an incense burner. It had two fish depicted on the side of the vase and would look stunning on any piece of antique furniture.

Be very careful when transporting your antiques as it can be a very costly.

Is this a real mermaid from the 19th century?

A bizarre stuffed animal made to look like a mermaid that was brought to Britain from the Far East in the 19th century has emerged in an antiques auction recently.
It has been made from fish and monkey parts, very cleverly stuck together and gave the impression it was once a genuine mermaid.

The mermaid is placed on a wooden plinth in a swimming pose with its arms and hands outstretched, its large eyes staring ahead and a smile on its face. It has a tail fin, dorsal fin and a human looking face and thin arms leading to hands and even some hair on its head.

They were originally made to fool people into thinking they were real animals and displayed in curiosity shops.

It would be a very unusual piece to have on for antique furniture and definitely a good talking point!

Preserving Heritage with Antique Furniture

Purchasing antique is a good way to preserve our heritage and culture and can be shared and enjoyed by the whole family but also passed onto future generations. There are not many items today that can stand the test of time as the materials used today are not as good quality as you once were able to get. Antiques and antique furniture have already proven their ability to last over 100s of years and will last 100s more. It is for this reason that antique furniture has become one of the most popular choices for family heirlooms to be handed down throughout generations, this is then gaining increases in value and extraordinary reverence as it is passed from generation to generation.

The other benefit of antique furniture is, it is all usable furniture that can be used from day to day use as everyone needs an antique desks or an antique chest of drawers to serve a practical purpose in their home but so will future generations, they are more lightly to re use the pieces when passed down to them.

Driscolls antiques has a large selection of antique furniture for sale on our antiques website and we deliver direct to your home. Our website is updated daily and I am sure you will find that perfect piece to pass down to your children but in the meantime can be used in day to day living.

When is an antique an antique?

When is an antique an antique, well this is a question we get asked many times and the answer is simple, it has to be over 100 years old to be classed as an antique. all of our antique furniture is over 100 years old but it is not to say pieces after 1910 are of poor quality as I see many stunning 1930s art deco pieces but I also see many poor quality pieces after 1910 so it is usually best to be on the safe side and only buy pre 1910. There are so many different types and styles of pieces of antique furniture and many people struggle what items to collect or buy.

I always recommend you only buy from trusted antiques dealers like ourselves at driscolls antiques and only buy items that you like the look of, dont just buy them for the age. It is best to buy quality furniture as some pieces might be cheaper to buy but will not be as a sound investment than a quality piece that might cost slightly more.

Buy items that are useable and sturdy so you will get many more years of use and only buy items in good original condition but not over restored as this can de value the pieces. The value of antique furniture is determined by many factors such as the cabinet maker, the originality of the condition of the piece, the quality and the usability. Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian furniture is very good quality furniture and extremely good value for money and we supply all these periods of furniture for sale and always keep our website updated with newly added antiques.

How the Union Jack Flag was formed in the Georgian period

The current Union Jack Flag was formed from 1 January 1801 in the period of George 111. It was the merged Ireland and the Great Britain to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain. On the diagram below you can see how England, Scotland and Irelands flags mixed together to make the British flag. From this period some very nice pieces of antique furniture was made. The late Georgian period produced pieces with bracket feet, nice simple designs and used woods such as oak and mahogany. Driscolls antiques stock some very nice pieces of antique furniture from this period, which is the Georgian and regency period. This flag was used though the Victorian and Edwardian period and even is still in use today.
