One of our customers has asked for additional photos of an antique desk we have for sale and they wanted to see the close ups of the marks on the leather that we have put in the description so below is examples of the pictures that we sent him so he can get a good idea of the piece. This then gives him the option to replace the leather or leave the original leather on top.

Where does the name Antique Davenport Come from

The antique davenport was first seen in the 1790s by Gillows of Lancaster and was called ‘Captain Davenport a desk’. It was a small writing desk called by the captain’s name.

The antique davenport was mainly used by Ladies for writing and would be designed to have a small chest of drawers with a desk on top. The antique davenport desk stayed the same in design over the years as most antique davenports have drawers that open at one side and have fixed drawers on the opposite side. Many antique davenports are fitted with casters at the bottom so they can be moved around the home easily as the lady would sometimes move them to a lighter spot in the home.

The top sections of antique davenports usually have a desk with a writing slope lid with leather writing surface. The interior would usually have small drawers for storing writing equipment and ink wells and pigeon holes.

In the Victorian period they were supported on elaborately scrolled or turned supports, which allows a recessed space for more leg room.

Some of the antique Victorian davenports had wood turned galleries and would have turned wood knobs

The antique davenport was made up to late Edwardian period and are unique pieces of antique furniture.

Why does some Period Furniture look later in Date

Some period antique furniture doesn’t look as old as they are and this is because when fashions changed the cabinet makers would recycle older antique furniture and adapt them to look like the current vogue. We have a prime example of antique furniture that has come in stock this week and it is a Georgian piece but has been changed in the Edwardian period. It is an antique mahogany bureau so it was built around the 1760s but this antique bureau has later Art Noveau influenced handles and feet.

It is still classed as a period piece but with later influences. The antique bureau has a moulded fall front and the interior has several pigeon holes, small oak lined drawers. The bureau has four graduating oak lined drawers below and is a very usable piece of antique writing furniture.

So it is a period bureau with later adaptations but these adaptations were done around one hundred years ago so they are also antiques in them selves. This adds more character to a piece and makes a great story so don’t be put off by later modifications as it just makes the piece of antique furniture more interesting and it also usually comes with a much smaller price tag so this can be an added bonus.
