How about a large antique desk for the office?

Antique desks are very useful and beautiful pieces of antique furniture and ideal for modern day uses like a computer in your office. Often we get requests for very large antique desks and partners desks and although they are difficult to find we do occasionally get some very nice larger desks for sale.

We have just received one of the best desks we have put up for sale in a while and it really is a stunner. It is large enough for all your computer needs and has come from a very good home. It is a large antique mahogany partner’s desk from the Georgian period and has been later fully restored to a very good standard. It is ready for years more use and is superb quality. the antique desk has a rectangular moulded top with a large tooled leather writing insert. As it is a partners desk both sides have working cupboards and drawers with a central drawer and a large kneehole so someone can sit opposite each other. Both of the twin pedestals have four graduating cock beaded drawers with brass handles and they stand on shaped bracket feet.

It splits for removal so will fit in most homes and is as reasonable to buy as a reproduction but this one is a genuine antique. If you need a large antique desk I highly recommend you have a look at this as you will struggle to find a desk as good as this.

What are the types of antique desks you can sit under?

There are several types of antique desks that we stock for sale. We have an antique kneehole desk which was originally made to have two uses. It was made for use as an antique dressing table and an antique writing desk. Until the mid 18th century the kneehole desk was mainly made of walnut and oak. Later the main wood of use was constructed usually in solid mahogany and the best quality would have mahogany drawer linings. The Georgian examples usually stand on shaped bracket feet and Victorian desks sometimes had bun feet or a plain plinth.

antique pedestal desks were introduced into Britain due to the demand for large, freestanding desks, with a large knee hole so was comfortable to sit at. The first antique pedestal desk was made in walnut and then mahogany was the main wood used. The late Georgian antique desks usually have three drawers in the frieze, the pedestals are fitted with either drawers or cupboards, and they stand on moulded plinths with hidden castors.

The Victorian cabinet makers used woods like oak and mahogany and made very usable designs, they usually have plain turned wooden knobs. More elaborate antique pedestal desks were produced in the late Victorian times.

We get some stunning antique desks for sale like our stunning antique Victorian mahogany twin pedestal desk with a rectangular moulded top and tooled leather writing insert above a central drawer and knee hole. Each pedestal has four graduating drawers with moulded edges, beautifully turned handles and stands on a plain plinth. We also have an antique Victorian mahogany desk with a rectangular moulded top with rounded corners and a leather tooled writing insert above a central mahogany lined drawer and large kneehole. Each pedestal has four graduating mahogany lined drawers with turned knobs and moulded edges.

They are very useful and useable pieces of antique furniture.

What are the different types of antique pedestal desks ?

There are lots of different types of antique pedestal desks and they are a very useful form of an antique desk. It is basically an antique desk with drawers down either side of a central knee hole. Sometimes they come with a leather top or faux leather writing insert. This type of antique desk came into existence in the mid 1600s and have become more and more popular over the years following due to the fact they are extremely useful pieces of antique furniture.

One form of an antique pedestal desk is an antique partners desk, which is in the same form but much larger and have drawers or cupboards on both sides so two people can use it at the same time.

Other types of antique pedestal desks are much more grand looking and one type is an antique dickens desk. This type of antique desk can come with lots of small interesting drawers, a writing slope and swinging locking flaps.

Most antique desks have lots of drawer space so are very useful and work very well with modern use such as computer desks.

If the drawer linings in an antique desk are mahogany lined rather than pine lined then this is a sign of quality, also some Victorian desks have castors so the desks can be moved around easily.

antique desks would have been used for the same purpose as they will be used today, for writing and in most businesses and homes there would have been an antique writing desk as writing was a big part of life, as it is today.

The latest desks we currently have for sale are antique Victorian walnut twin pedestal desk, Georgian mahogany writing desk / office desk, Victorian mahogany cylinder top desk / writing desk, Victorian mahogany desk and an antique Edwardian mahogany desk.

Types of antique davenports and cylinder top desks

There are lots of types of interesting antique desks that we supply and there are two particular models that I really like. These are antique davenport desks and the other type of antique writing furniture is an antique cylinder desk. The antique davenport desk was originally made by a very good antique furniture maker called Gillows and it was named after a captain davenport who the first one was made for. Antique davenports can come in lots of styles like a piano top but all of them always have lots of stationery compartments, letter racks, pen holders and ink wells and small drawers.

The antique cylinder desk is a desk with a cylinder front and the interior usually has lots of small drawers and pigeon holes. They are very elegant roll top desks and can come in the Sheraton revival styles but the best are usually the Victorian mahogany types.

We have both these types of antique desks for sale at the moment

We have an antique inlaid walnut davenport from the Victorian period that has a fall front with original brown tooled leather writing insert. The davenport has four graduating mahogany lined drawers with turned handles and stands on beautiful turned feet.

our antique Victorian mahogany cylinder top desk has a cylinder fall front with turned handles. The interior has a writing surface with tooled leather writing inserts and small drawers and pigeon holes. Each pedestal has three mahogany lined drawers with turned mahogany knobs.

Both are beautiful antique desks and are very nice designs.

Do you need more photos of antique furniture before buying from us, then just email. We can provide more close up details of the handles, leather any old repairs etc. If you want pictures of the construction or a closer look at the finish we will try our best to provide as clear pictures as possible. One of our customers has asked for additional photos of an antique desk we have for sale and they wanted to see the close ups of the marks on the leather that we have put in the description so below is examples of the pictures that we sent him so he can get a good idea of the piece. This then gives him the option to replace the leather or leave the original leather on top.
