The history of Campaign / Military Furniture

In the Georgian and Victorian period, the higher up in command would always take their military furniture with them when being posted to a foreign country. It is amazing to think such good quality antique furniture would travel around with people.

To begin with antique campaign furniture was mainly commissioned by the wealthiest officers but as time progressed more and more people started to buy such useful furniture.

Campaign furniture or military antique furniture or was seen quite often in the Napoleonic wars. Along with the antique Wellington chest, campaign chest and folding chairs there was quite a selection.

We have just put up for sale a stunning example from the Regency period in mahogany. It is a military antique chest of drawers with brass fittings above cock beaded drawers with flush fitting military brass handles. As with most campaign furniture it splits into two sections for ease of removals. It has the original back boards and stands on turned bun feet. You can only imagine what this chest has been through but it is still in very good condition.

The price difference from a period or Victorian commode

I have just been looking through a well known antique furniture auction catalogue and noticed a George III mahogany commode with a rectangular moulded top above three long drawers and stand with a shaped apron with carved foliate decoration on cabochon and leaf carved cabriole legs and scroll feet. This is going to be auctioned with an estimate of 10 to 15,000 + buyers premium of approximately 30 percent. This is a lot of money for an antique chest of drawers so if you do not want to spend such a large amount we might have a very good alternative solution.

commode1 thumb The price difference from a period or Victorian commode

We have a similar piece of antique furniture but this is a later copy of the original piece. The thing about this piece is it is still an antique as it was made in the Victorian period. It has a rectangular top with moulded edge above three graduating drawers and original brass handles. The corners of the Victorian chest are canted with beautiful carving decoration and it stands on scrolled cabriole legs with carvings.

Both are similar in design but our chest is for sale for less than £1500 so financially you will be far better off. Have a look at our antiques website for details.

What is a bachelor chest – antique furniture

antique furniture is furniture over 100 years old and comes in many different types. One type of antique chest of drawers is a bachelor chest, which is a low chest of drawers with folding top or pull out slide. The top folds forward to double the size, supported by pull out rails and this would be used to straighten clothes or an extra surface for writing. The bachelor chest was introduced in the early Georgian period. Bachelors chests are quite rare to find but we do get them in stock and below are two very good examples of antique bachelor chests that we have had for sale.

Like our small antique mahogany bachelor chest of drawers with a rectangular moulded top above a pull out brushing slide above four mahogany lined, cock beaded graduating drawers with brass swan neck handles.

Antique Military furniture – campaign chest

antique campaign or antique military furniture are pieces of furniture designed for military use and were made to dismantle for moving around when travelling. Some military chests have makers stamp Army & Navy CSL, which stands for The Army and Navy Co-operative Society Ltd. What is an antique wellington chest ?

The antique commode originally came from France in the 17th century and this was a word to describe the antique chest of drawers. The antique chest of drawers became the term used in Britain from the early 18th century as the French design in antique furniture was popular and so the commode was copied from the French. The antique chest of drawers became one of the main pieces of antique furniture used throughout the ages and came in many forms such as the bow front or serpentine front and also unusual designs like the antique wellington chest. These designs were used mainly in the 19th century and the antique wellington chest got its name because of the great wellingtons victory of 1815. Originally the military chest was made for the war so it could be transported easily on a horse and the more decorative Wellington chest stayed at home. The antique wellington chest first came about during the 1820s, and are tall narrow in shape, usually with seven drawers (one for every day of the week). Instead of each drawer having its own lock, they have a single locking mechanism in the form of a hinged flap on the side, which locks over the drawer fronts to stop them opening.

We currently have a very nice example for sale and it is a Victorian oak Wellington chest. This antique chest has a rectangular top above seven graduating mahogany lined drawers with turned handles. The chest has two beautifully carved corbels, stands on a plain plinth. It is a very nice piece of antique furniture, not only decorative but also very useful.
