Victorian Bookcases

Victorian antique bookcases are very nice pieces of antique furniture and they are very useful. victorian bookcases come in lots of different sizes and woods. We always have a large stock of antique bookcases for sale and display them on our website for sale. The latest Victorian bookcases we have put up for sale are very nice pieces.

Firstly we put up for sale an antique Victorian walnut bookcase that has a moulded cornice above two glazed doors. The lower section of the Victorian bookcase has a moulded top above two mahogany lined drawers and two cupboard doors with raised fielded panels.

The other Victorian antique bookcase we have put up for sale this week is an antique Victorian mahogany bookcase cupboard and it has a moulded cornice above a deep frieze and two glazed doors with arched moulding. This Victorian bookcase has beautifully carved corbels and it has a shaped frieze drawer above two cupboard doors with arched moulding.

These are very useful pieces of antique furniture and constructed from quality woods so they will last many hundreds of years if looked after properly and they can withstand heavy books unlike a lot of modern bookcases.

What is a swan neck pediment?

A swan neck pediment is a pediment usually on the top of an antique bookcase and it is in the shape of two swan necks facing opposite direction to each other. A very nice example is of an antique bookcase we have just got in stock.

This piece of antique furniture is an antique mahogany bureau bookcase and it has a swan neck pediment above a moulded cornice and deep freeze. The piece has two astragal glazed doors and the interior has three adjustable shelves. The lower section has a moulded fall front with a beautifully figured oval panel and the fitted interior has several pigeon holes and two small drawers with brass knobs. The antique bureau has three graduating mahogany lined drawers with swan neck handles and stands on shaped bracket feet.

A swan neck pediment makes a piece of antique furniture look very grand and can be seen on lots of Georgian and Edwardian pieces of antique furniture.

Globe Wernicke Oak Office Bookcases

We sometimes get some very unusual antique bookcases and this week we have for sale an antique Globe Wernicke oak office bookcase. Antique furniture by the Globe-Wernicke Company started in 1904 when Otto Wernicke, owner of Wernicke Furniture Co bought the Globe Company. Wernicke also acquired the Fred Macey Co which also made the well known stacking barrister bookcases like the one we have for sale. Globe Wernicke was the main maker and supplier of this type of stacking bookcase until it fell into receivership in 1932 because of the Depression but then it re opened in 1934.

Our antique bookcase that we have for sale is is in the style and quality of Globe Wernicke and was built around the 1920s.
The bookcase has a rounded top above four glazed ‘up and over’ doors and the bookcase is made up of four sections with metal straps. It is a four section bookcase so it is designed to put additional sections in if required. It is a unique design and a very useful piece of antique furniture.

What is Break fronted Antique furniture

The term used in antique furniture ‘break fronted’ is basically the piece steps forward in the centre. I have some very nice pieces of antique furniture for sale at the moment and I have shown some pieces below so you can see how the break fronted design looks. The first example is a victorian burr walnut triple wardrobe and this piec3e of antique furniture has a breakfront moulded cornice above a deep frieze and a large central mirrored door. The two outer doors have arched moulded panels and the interiors have brass hanging rails above mahogany lined drawers. The central interior has five mahogany lined sliding linen trays above two mahogany lined drawers with original turned knobs. The piece stands on a moulded breakfront plinth.

The second example of a piece of break fronted furniture is an antique Victorian walnut breakfront bookcase. The antique bookcase has a breakfront moulded top above a moulded frieze, four glazed doors with beautiful carving, carved corbels and the piece stands on a breakfront moulded plinth and the sides have raised fielded panels.

They are both break fronted and this means they are quality as the cabinet maker would have to put a lot of extra effort to make the pieces and only a skilled cabinet maker could make the break fronted design.

What is astragal Glazing in antique furniture

Astragal glazing in antique furniture is basically glazed doors with moulded divides that make a very nice design. The pieces of glass are cut separately and placed into the moulded sections. We always have some very nice pieces of antique furniture for sale with astragal glazing and below are some examples so you can see how the glazing looks and what kind of pieces have them.

The first example is an antique Edwardian inlaid mahogany floor standing corner display cabinet and it has a moulded cornice above a deep frieze and an astragal glazed door. The interior has two fixed shelves. The lower section has a moulded top above two astragal glazed doors and working lock.

The second example is an antique Edwardian mahogany glazed display antique bookcase in the Georgian revival style and thy antique bookcase has a moulded cornice with dentil moulding above two astragal glazed doors with key, working lock and reeded clash moulding. The lower section has a moulded top above two cupboard doors with beautifully figured flamed mahogany panels. The lower interior has one removable shelf and the piece stands on four tapering legs with shaped feet.

Both these pieces of antique furniture have astragal glazing and as you can see it is a very nice way to make glazed doors look so much more interesting.

The other piece of solid oak that we have in stock is
