We have just listed for sale the most stunning Huge Victorian Oak Antique Library Bookcase ca. 1840 and thought we would publish additional pictures as it is such a superb piece, so needed additional images. The antique bookcase has a break fronted moulded cornice above ten glazed doors with moulding and each interior has adjustable shelves. It stands on a moulded break fronted plinth, has its original back boards and is a gorgeous warm, light oak with a striking grain, good patina, is in very good condition and has been beautifully cleaned using a traditional form of wax finishing.

as you can see it is a magnificent antique bookcase and you do not get many of such a large size that come onto the market. please see our antiques website for further details.

We always have some superb antique bookcases for sale and this week we have just listed two superb examples. Both are from a similar period in the early Victorian era and both have a similar look so will fit in the same room and look beautiful together.

Our antique Victorian mahogany glazed bookcase is a nice size for most properties but has lots of book storage. It has a moulded cornice above a deep frieze and two arched glazed doors with moulded edges and the lower section has a rectangular top above a deep frieze, two cupboard doors with arched moulded panels and stands on a moulded plinth.

We have a large Edwardian antique Arts and Crafts oak open bookcase with a moulded front edge and is simple in design so is both attractive and practical for a large book collection.

For a smaller piece we have a small antique Edwardian mahogany waterfall open bookcase with a shaped back above four shelves and waterfall sides.

Small Antique Pier Cabinets

We get in stock very nice small sized antique pier cabinets in various styles and woods and these would have been used for displaying beautiful smaller collectables or they can be used for books. They are usually either stood on a plain plinth or on bracket feet and are mainly made from mahogany, walnut or rosewood. Our selection of antique furniture always stock lots of antique pier cabinets and because they are small they fit so well in older homes and modern homes. We currently have three very nice antique pier cabinets in at the moment.

We have a Victorian walnut pier cabinet with a rectangular top above a shaped frieze with beautiful central inlay. The cabinet has a central glazed door and the interior has two larger and two smaller shelves with their original velvet linings. The sides are beautifully inlaid and have brass ormolu mounts. The pier cabinet stands on shaped bracket feet, has original back boards. We also have a Victorian walnut inlaid pier cabinet with a rectangular top above a beautifully inlaid moulded shaped frieze. The cabinet has a central glazed door, with brass ormolu mounts. And we have an antique Victorian ebonised pier cabinet with a rectangular moulded top above a deep frieze with a beautifully painted porcelain floral central plaque. The cabinet has a central glazed door and it stands on a plain plinth with brass ormolu mounts and inlays.

Small Antique Glazed Bookcases

Here at Driscolls Antiques Ltd we have beautiful pieces of antique furniture for sale and we also have some unusual pieces for the smaller areas in your home. Smaller pieces of antique furniture are sometimes referred to as antique dwarf furniture and are pieces that look like larger antique furniture but have been built to much more smaller proportions.

For example we have two very nice small antique bookcases and on the photos they look like larger pieces but if you check the measurements you will see they are actually smaller versions.

We have a small antique Victorian mahogany glazed cabinet with a rectangular top above two glazed doors with arched moulding and the sides have beautiful carved, moulded pilasters.

The other small antique bookcase is an antique Regency small dwarf walnut bookcase and this bookcase has a rectangular moulded top above two glazed doors and is of small proportions stands on four small bun feet.

These are very nice small pieces of antique furniture and will fit in any home.

Antique bookshelves come in lots of different styles, shapes and sizes. A very popular style of antique bookcase is an antique open bookcase and we do get lost of these in stock in various sizes. They are very nice pieces for displaying books and are easier if you need to get to your books quickly as they have no doors on the front. The other good thing about this type of antique bookcase is they came in smaller sizes so they fit in most homes.

The other Victorian antique bookcase we have put up for sale this week is an antique Victorian mahogany bookcase cupboard and it has a moulded cornice above a deep frieze and two glazed doors with arched moulding. This Victorian bookcase has beautifully carved corbels and it has a shaped frieze drawer above two cupboard doors with arched moulding.

These are very useful pieces of antique furniture and constructed from quality woods so they will last many hundreds of years if looked after properly and they can withstand heavy books unlike a lot of modern bookcases.

What is a swan neck pediment?

A swan neck pediment is a pediment usually on the top of an antique bookcase and it is in the shape of two swan necks facing opposite direction to each other. A very nice example is of an antique bookcase we have just got in stock.

This piece of antique furniture is an antique mahogany bureau bookcase and it has a swan neck pediment above a moulded cornice and deep freeze. The piece has two astragal glazed doors and the interior has three adjustable shelves. The lower section has a moulded fall front with a beautifully figured oval panel and the fitted interior has several pigeon holes and two small drawers with brass knobs. The antique bureau has three graduating mahogany lined drawers with swan neck handles and stands on shaped bracket feet.

A swan neck pediment makes a piece of antique furniture look very grand and can be seen on lots of Georgian and Edwardian pieces of antique furniture.
